Happy International Women's Day!
To celebrate International Women’s Day yesterday, we decided to bring awareness to an internationally recognized individual who has done tremendous work in the disability community. Mallory Weggemann, a swimmer with paralysis and Paralympic Gold Medalist. Weggemann has traveled the world as a Paralympic Champion, media creator, and spokes-person for the differently-abled.
She recently published a book titled Limitless, the Power of Hope and Resilience to Overcome Circumstances. The book speaks to the importance of independence and the harmful stereotypes that many in the disabled community face. She talks about the sense of dependence that consumed her when she needed to rely on others for transportation and the freedom she felt once she was able to drive an adapted car. Although the book is not solely about transportation, it is an excellent read for anyone who is differently-abled or who is not to learn from the lived experiences of someone who uses a wheelchair and to understand that many differently-abled individuals live very fulfilling lives.
